Is this a good time to re-finance or will the rates be going lower? Unfortunately, we can’t predict interest rates, so we cannot give any indication on whether rates will be going down or up. As far as whether this is a good time to refinance, the answer to this question depends on a number of things including your current rate. The general rule of thumb is that the new rate you want to refinance to should be at least 1% less than your current rate to make it worth your while. Refinancing has fees associated with it so this should be taken into account when deciding on whether or not to refinance. The other factor to take into consideration is the equity available in your home. Generally, the maximum loan-to-value (LTV) for refinances is 90%. At any time the LTV is 80.01% or higher, private mortgage insurance (PMI) will be required.
